A tribute to Richard Wright

September 16th, 2008 at 09:10am dark

The news caught me this morning, even if the tragedy occurred yesterday afternoon: Richard Wright, the Pink Floyd keyboardist, has passed away on 15 September 2008, struggling against cancer.
Being the band fan I am, I cannot think again to all the wonderful music that they have composed together. Given my current mood, I guess that Wish You Were Here is the best one…

So, so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell,
blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?
And did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?
How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We’re just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have you found? The same old fears.
Wish you were here.

In my eyes, this is a great melancholic song dedicated to those who suffer from distance (both geographical and metaphoric) and alienation, with a subtle suggestion to never give up. Never. Give the best of yourself to those who deserve it.
